The language of ELA instruction can be divided into several different categories. One category consists of those concept words that relate to the themes of the literature (courage, friendship). Another comprises literary terms and devices (similes, metaphors). A third is the language used to talk about the writing process (pre-writing, revising). And a fourth is the language of grammar and punctuation (conjunctions, quotation marks).
